Everyone is welcome

Accessibility at Jewel of India

We want everyone to be able to read our menu, find our hours, and get in touch with us. If anything on this site gets in your way, please tell us and we will fix it.

Our commitment

Jewel of India has been a family-run restaurant in Seattle's University District since November 2002. We serve students, families, and neighbours with a wide range of needs, and we want our website to work the same way our dining room does: for everybody.

We are working toward conformance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA. We say working toward deliberately. We test our site regularly, we fix what we find, and we would rather tell you honestly where we still fall short than claim a standard we have not fully met.

What we have done

Specific things already in place across this site:

  • Every photo has descriptive alternative text for screen readers.
  • Every form field has a visible, properly associated label.
  • The whole site can be navigated by keyboard, without a mouse.
  • Headings are in a logical order, so screen readers can move through a page sensibly.
  • Text resizes and reflows when you zoom, and the layout works down to small phone screens.
  • Menus, prices, hours and dietary information are real text, not pictures of text.
  • Phone numbers are tappable links, and the address links straight to directions.
  • Nothing on the site flashes, autoplays audio, or moves in a way you cannot stop.

Where we still fall short

Being straight with you: a few small pieces of text in our gold brand colour do not yet meet the Level AA contrast ratio, and some small uppercase labels sit close to the limit. We are working on it. If any text on this site is hard for you to read, call us at (206) 523-5275 and we will read it to you or take your order over the phone.

Content from other companies

Some things on this site come from other companies, and we do not control how accessible they are. That includes the Google Maps that show our location, our delivery partners (Uber Eats, DoorDash and Grubhub), and our catering listing on EzCater. If you run into a barrier on one of those, please call us directly and we will handle your order or question ourselves, by phone, without you needing to use their tools.

If you need help right now

Call (206) 523-5275 during our hours, every day from 11 AM to 10 PM. A real person answers. We are glad to read the menu aloud, describe dishes, take an order, arrange catering, or answer questions about vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, Jain-friendly and halal options.

Our dining room is wheelchair accessible, including the entrance and restroom, and we have high chairs available.

Tell us how we are doing

If you hit a problem on this site, or you have an idea for making it easier to use, we would genuinely like to hear it. Email [email protected] or call (206) 523-5275. Please tell us the page and what happened, and we will get back to you within two business days.
